Earthworks
refers to the large scale excavation, alteration and modification
of land for a specific new purpose using heavy equipment.
Some of the important considerations
at this stage include:
Shape – Will the physical shape of the proposed surface fit
efficiently into the existing environment,
at the right angle, without obstacles in the way of users and spectators? Slope – Does the land provide
for the speedy removal of excess rainfall or will modifications need to
be made? Sun – Do existing buildings and
infrastructure impede sunlight? Will existing trees and other
vegetation create unwanted
shade or other environmental issues?
